Peter Haas — lead pastor of Substance Church, author, EDM turntablist, and one of the more unlikely conversion stories in modern American ministry.

The Origin Story

A nightclub encounter that changed everything

Before Substance Church existed, Peter Haas was working behind the decks as an electronic dance music DJ in a nightclub — not exactly the typical resume of a future megachurch pastor.

The Challenge

While working a club gig, Peter says he issued a direct challenge to God to prove himself in an undeniable way — and describes getting an answer almost immediately, in a moment he calls a full Gospel encounter that reshaped the direction of his life.

The Turn

That nightclub experience pulled him straight into ministry. He spent about a decade pastoring in Wisconsin before relocating to Minneapolis in 2004 to start something new: an arts-driven, culturally fluent church built for people who'd never normally set foot in one.

The Twist Nobody Expects

Unlike a lot of conversion stories where the old life gets left behind entirely, Peter never put down the turntables. He still writes, produces, and tours as a DJ — just for a different purpose now.

The Church He Built

Substance Church, Minneapolis

Founded in 2004 with his wife Carolyn, Substance was built around an unusual premise: reach artists, intellectuals, and unchurched twenty-somethings with a church that actually looks and sounds like their world.

2004

Substance is planted

Peter and Carolyn launch Substance in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area in partnership with the Association of Related Churches (ARC).

2005

First Sunday services

The church begins meeting on the University of Minnesota's Saint Paul campus.

2010

National recognition

Outreach Magazine ranks Substance among the fastest-growing congregations in the country, citing its blend of ultra-contemporary worship, cell groups, and cafe-church style.

2015–2016

Permanent campuses

After several moves, Substance settles into facilities in Spring Lake Park and the historic Wesley building in downtown Minneapolis, later expanding internationally to Monterrey, Mexico.

Author

Books worth the shelf space

Peter writes with the same sense of humor he brings to the stage — self-deprecating, a little irreverent, aimed at church culture as much as anyone outside it.

Book · Humor / Faith

Pharisectomy

A best-selling, comedic look at legalism and self-righteousness in church culture — subtitled around "removing your inner Pharisee."

Book · Leadership

Broken Escalators

A collection of funny (and occasionally frightening) lessons on stagnation, growth, and what it takes to move to the next level.

Still a Musician

Music, film, and comedy

Peter plays a wide range of instruments — cello to electric guitar — and spends much of his downtime in his home recording studio. His musical outlets tie directly back to Substance.

Worship Brand

Substance I/O

The church's official worship music project, where Peter writes and produces contemporary worship music.

EDM Project

Substance Variant

His EDM-driven worship outlet, where he tours and performs as a turntablist — a direct throughline from his nightclub days.

Online

Documentary-style teaching

Peter also produces documentary-film-style Bible teaching content for YouTube, alongside his regular blog.

Home Life

Family

Peter and his wife Carolyn — who also serves on Substance's executive team — live in the Twin Cities and co-lead the church together.
